Sermon Summary

Every follower of Jesus experiences a battle—not merely against difficult circumstances, but within the heart itself. In Galatians 5, Paul reminds believers that the Christian life is a daily conflict between the desires of the flesh and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Pastor Terry reminded us that salvation is never earned through rules or good behavior. We are saved by God's grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ. Yet after salvation, the battle begins. The Holy Spirit now lives within every believer, empowering us to resist sin and become more like Christ.

Walking by the Spirit isn't simply a good suggestion—it is God's command. Rather than relying on our own strength, we're called to surrender daily to the Spirit's leadership. As we do, the fruit of the Spirit naturally begins to grow in our lives.

The question isn't whether we'll face spiritual battles.

The question is:
Who will we follow today—the flesh or the Spirit?

Walking By the Spirit: Winning the Battle Within

Galatians 5:16–26

Every Christian knows what it's like to struggle.

We want to do what's right, yet we're tempted to do what's wrong. We long to honor Christ, yet our old sinful nature still pulls us in the opposite direction. Sometimes that battle is obvious. Other times it takes place quietly—in our thoughts, attitudes, words, or reactions.

The good news is that God has not left us to fight alone.

This week's message from Galatians 5 reminds us that the Christian life is not about trying harder; it's about walking closer with the Holy Spirit.

The Battle Is Real

The Apostle Paul describes two opposing forces at work in every believer's life: the flesh and the Spirit.

The flesh represents our old sinful nature with its selfish desires, while the Holy Spirit leads us toward obedience, holiness, and Christlikeness. Every day we choose which voice we will follow.

Pastor Terry reminded us that this struggle doesn't mean we've failed. In fact, the very presence of the battle is evidence that God's Spirit is at work within us. Before we trusted Christ, we simply followed our sinful nature. Now the Holy Spirit lovingly calls us toward a different way of living.

Grace Is Still the Foundation

Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia because false teachers claimed that salvation required both God's grace and obedience to Jewish law.

Paul couldn't have been clearer.

We are saved by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ.

No amount of rule-keeping can earn God's forgiveness.

Yet God's grace doesn't give us permission to live however we please. Instead, His grace empowers us to become the people He created us to be. The Holy Spirit works within us, changing our desires from the inside out.

What Does It Mean to Walk by the Spirit?

Walking by the Spirit isn't a one-time decision. It's a daily relationship.

As we spend time in God's Word, pray, worship, confess our sins, and surrender our lives to Christ, the Holy Spirit shapes our hearts. He gives us strength when temptation comes and wisdom when decisions must be made.

This is why Paul commands believers:
"Walk by the Spirit, and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16)

The focus isn't simply avoiding sin.

The focus is staying close to Jesus.

The Fruit Everyone Can See

When we walk with the Holy Spirit, our lives begin to display His fruit:

? Love
? Joy
? Peace
⏳ Patience
❤️ Kindness
? Goodness
? Faithfulness
? Gentleness
? Self-control

Notice that Paul doesn’t call these “works.” Fruit grows naturally in a healthy environment.

Likewise, these qualities grow as we remain connected to Christ. They become evidence that God is transforming us from the inside out.

A Challenge for This Week

Choose one fruit of the Spirit that you would like God to strengthen in your life this week.

Pray each morning:
"Holy Spirit, help this fruit grow in me today."

Then watch for opportunities throughout the day to practice it.

As Pastor Terry reminded us, the goal of the Christian life is not simply avoiding the deeds of the flesh—it's becoming more like Jesus.

Every step you take in obedience is another step of walking by the Spirit.

May God help each of us walk closely with Him this week.

Sermon Summary

Freedom is one of the most treasured words in the Christian life—but biblical freedom is often misunderstood. In Galatians 5, Paul reminds believers that Jesus didn't set us free so we could make our own rules or return to religious rule-keeping. He set us free to obey Him.

The Judaizers insisted that faith in Christ wasn't enough. They taught that believers also had to keep the Old Testament law, symbolized by circumcision, in order to be truly accepted by God. Paul boldly rejects this "grace plus" gospel. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

Pastor Terry challenged us to remember three simple truths:

Love one another.
The evidence of genuine faith isn't religious performance but Christlike love.

Preach the Cross of Christ.
The cross reminds us we cannot save ourselves. Jesus has already done everything necessary for our salvation.

Serve one another.
Christian freedom is not self-centered. It is expressed by humbly serving others just as Christ served us.

The Gospel doesn't place us in chains of legalism. Instead, Jesus breaks our chains and empowers us through the Holy Spirit to live lives that honor Him.

Freedom Isn't Doing Whatever You Want

Our culture celebrates freedom.

Freedom to choose.

Freedom to speak.

Freedom to live life our own way.

But biblical freedom is something even greater.

Paul tells the Galatian believers they are no longer slaves to sin or to legalism. Christ has done what we never could.

That doesn't mean Christians have no responsibilities.

Instead, grace changes our motivation.

We don't obey because we're trying to earn God's love.

We obey because we already have it.

This week Pastor Terry gave us three truths worth remembering:

Love one another.
Preach the Cross.
Serve one another.

These aren't three steps to becoming a Christian.

They're three evidences that Jesus has already changed our hearts.

Real freedom doesn't produce selfishness.

It produces love.

Real freedom doesn't produce pride.

It produces humility.

Real freedom always points back to Jesus.

Living as Saints

Sermon Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24

Sermon Summary

Have you ever said, "I'm no saint"?

Most of us have. We remember our failures more easily than God's promises. But this week's message reminded us that Scripture paints a very different picture of every believer in Jesus Christ.

Dr. John Woodward challenged us to see ourselves through God's eyes. In the New Testament, the word saint isn't reserved for a select few extraordinary Christians. It describes every person who has been born again through faith in Jesus Christ. God has set His people apart for Himself.

Our identity comes before our activity.

Because we have been made new in Christ, we are called to live differently—not in order to become saints, but because we already are.

BELIEVE YOU ARE A SAINT
Our culture often tells us to define ourselves by our past, our mistakes, our feelings, or our accomplishments. The Bible tells a different story.

When we trust Christ as Savior, we become:
A new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Born again (1 Peter 1:23)
Temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)
Set apart for God
Saints

This grace-based identity isn't earned—it is received through Christ's finished work on the cross.

LIVE AS A SAINT
Our new identity leads to a new way of living.

Rather than blending into the culture around us, God calls believers to be holy, compassionate, and distinct. We are invited to reflect the character of Christ in our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and community.

Dr. Woodward summarized the Christian life with two memorable words:
Surrendering.
Each day we choose to lay down our own plans and submit ourselves to God's leadership (1 Peter 3:15; Romans 12:1,2).

Trusting.
Rather than relying on our own strength, we depend on Jesus to live His life through us by the power of the Holy Spirit.

This is exactly what Galatians 2:20 teaches:
"It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me."

The Christian life isn't about trying harder.

It's about trusting deeper.

A LIFE OF HOPE
One of the most powerful moments of the message came through the testimony of a man named Mike, whose life was transformed after discovering his identity in Christ. Freedom from addiction didn't come simply through determination—it came through believing what God said about him and learning to surrender and trust Christ daily. That same invitation is extended to every believer.

No matter your past...

No matter your struggles...

God calls you His own.

You are not defined by your failures.

In Christ, you are a saint.

This week, ask yourself:
Am I living according to who God says I am?

May God continue to sanctify us completely as we surrender to Him and trust Him day by day.

Living as Saints: Your Identity Changes Everything

If someone asked you to describe yourself in just a few words, what would you say?

Maybe you'd mention your occupation, your family, your hobbies, or where you're from.

Some people, however, immediately think about their weaknesses.

"I'm a failure."

"I'm not good enough."

"I've made too many mistakes."

While we all recognize that we're sinners saved by God's grace, Scripture reminds believers that our deepest identity is no longer defined by our past. It is defined by what Jesus has done for us.

That was the heart of Sunday's message: If you belong to Christ, you are a saint.

What Is a Saint?
Many people think of saints as extraordinary Christians who lived centuries ago. The New Testament, however, uses the word saints to describe ordinary believers who have trusted Christ.

A saint isn't someone who has achieved perfection.

A saint is someone who has been set apart by God (Hebrews 10:10).

When Jesus saves us, He doesn't simply forgive our sins. He gives us a brand-new identity.

We become His children.

We become His workmanship.

We become temples of the Holy Spirit.

We become saints.

Identity Before Behavior
One of the most important biblical principles is that identity always comes before obedience.

God doesn't say:
"Live perfectly, and then I'll accept you."

Instead, He says:
"You belong to Me. Now live like My child."

That's a tremendous difference.

The Christian life isn't driven by guilt.
It's motivated by grace.

Our obedience becomes a joyful response to God's love rather than an attempt to earn it.

Two Words That Can Change Your Week
Dr. Woodward gave us two practical words to remember.

Surrender.
Every day presents opportunities to choose our own way or God's way.

Surrender means placing our plans, ambitions, fears, and decisions into God's hands.

Like Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, we learn to say,
"Not my will, but Yours be done."

Trust.
Surrender alone isn't enough.

We also trust Christ to provide the strength we don't possess ourselves.

Galatians 2:20 reminds us that Christ now lives in every believer.

We're not called to imitate Jesus in our own strength.

We're invited to let Jesus live His life through us.

Living Differently
Because our identity has changed, our lives should begin to change as well.

Not overnight.

Not perfectly.

But steadily.

God continues His work of sanctifying us—making us more like Jesus.

That transformation affects how we speak.

How we forgive.

How we serve.

How we treat our families.

How we respond under pressure.

How we love people who are difficult to love.

The world may not understand why Christians choose humility over pride or forgiveness over revenge, but those choices reveal the character of Christ living within us.

The Good News
Perhaps you've stumbled recently.

Maybe you've failed in ways that leave you wondering whether God can still use you.

Remember this:
Your failures do not erase your identity.

When we sin, we confess it, welcome God's forgiveness, and continue walking with Him.

We don't remain trapped by shame because our standing before God rests on Christ—not our performance.

Living This Week as a Saint
As you begin each morning this week, pause and pray:
"Lord, thank You for making me Your child. Help me surrender to You today. Help me trust You to live through me. May my life reflect the grace You've shown me."

Because when we remember who we are in Christ, it changes how we live.

And that changes everything.

I’m reading "Creating Characters: The Complete Guide to Populating Your Fiction," by the Editors of Readers Digest. It’s the kind of book that feels like a conversation with a group of experienced writers who know how to create unforgettable characters. Instead of just talking about character development in theory, it shares practical advice on making your characters feel real—from the moment they appear on the page to the final chapter.

Emily Johnson, Worship Leader

I am not currently reading anything, but I like to watch miniseries and movies on Pure Flix. I enjoy "Heartland" and "County Rescue." The movies are fantastic, too. They are family friendly and many of them are Christian-based. It is good, wholesome entertainment.

And as you know, I enjoy all things Dollywood and hiking for my other activities. Anything involving the outdoors, I'm there for it!

Beth Hatfield, Ministry Asst/Receptionist

My college student and I enjoy seeing musicals and movies together. Some are more her cup of tea, and others are mine, but we enjoy spending the time together and thoroughly discussing what we just watched.

We kicked off the summer with the Broadway musical, "Beauty and the Beast." We have seen several movies: "The Amazing Digital Circus," "Disclosure Day," and "Toy Story 5!"

We are looking forward to seeing "The Odyssey," "Hadestown" (the live pro-shot musical) and "Spiderman: Brand New Day" and one last live Broadway musical to end the summer with a play called "& Juliet!"

I listen to a lot of books on Audible or Libby (Sevier Co. Library System's app) while driving to/from work every day, and my list is eclectic: thrillers, science fiction, historical novels (WWII is my favorite period), romances, autobiographies. I read them all.

My favorite listen has to be Matthew McConaughey's "Greenlights," read by the author.

Currently, I'm listening to "Sold On A Monday" by Kristina McMorris. This novel is very different, inspired by the iconic 1948 photo of children on a porch with "4 Children for Sale; Inquire Within" scrawled on a sign. The story follows a fictional photographer and secretary "who set out to right a wrongdoing and mend a fractured family, at the risk of everything they value."

Margaret Hicks, Church Pianist

I love to read books about bookshops. I love reading Ellery Adams because she always sets her novels in a bookstore and centers them on a murder mystery.

“The Tattered Cover” was the last book I read by her. Other titles I have read about bookshops by other authors include “The Lost Bookshop,” “The Second Story Bookshop,” “The Bookshop for Troublesome Women,” and “The Boxcar Librarian.”

In addition, I am currently reading “Systematic Theology.” I like reading Stuart Woods books and James Patterson’s Alex Cross series. I am also currently reading David Jeremiah’s book on Heaven.

As you can see, I am an eclectic reader. I like a lot of different books and read two or three at a time. I keep them in different rooms, so I always have a book to read, no matter which room I’m in.

I have several books on hold at the library so that I always have one I’m waiting on. I don’t want to be without a book!

P.S. I also play bridge two days a week.

The Benefits of Online Giving

1. It helps make giving a regular habit.

Life gets busy. People travel, get sick, work weekends, or simply forget to bring a check or cash. Online and text giving allow members to schedule recurring gifts so their generosity remains consistent, even when they're away.

"Giving becomes part of your regular rhythm of worship, not something you have to remember each Sunday."

2. It supports the church's ministry consistently.

Regular giving helps the church plan ministry, missions, outreach, staffing, and community programs with greater confidence because income is more predictable.

3. It's convenient.

Most people already pay bills, buy groceries, and manage finances from their phones. Giving takes less than a minute through a secure online platform or a simple text message.

Giving online or by text isn't about replacing worship—it's about making generosity easier to practice consistently. Whether you're in the sanctuary, traveling, or joining us online, these options help you support the ministry God is doing through our church with just a few taps.

4. It allows people to worship wherever they are.

Whether someone is traveling, homebound, watching online, or deployed for work, they can continue participating in the ministry of the church.

5. It reduces missed opportunities.

Christ Sets Us Free!

Freedom is something worth protecting.

As Americans reflected on our nation's history this weekend, Galatians reminded us of an even greater freedom—the freedom Christ purchased through His death and resurrection.
Paul points his readers back nearly 2,000 years before his own day to the story of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Isaac, and Ishmael.

Why?

Because history teaches theology.

Abraham received God's promise that he would become the father of a great nation. Yet when God's timing seemed slow, Abraham and Sarah took matters into their own hands. Instead of trusting God's promise, they relied on human effort.

How often do we do the same?

We may believe Jesus saves us by grace but then spend the rest of our lives trying to earn God's approval through performance.

Paul reminds us that believers are not children of Hagar—the slave woman—but children of Sarah, the woman of promise.

Our salvation isn't built on what we accomplish.

It's built on what Christ accomplished.

That changes everything.

We obey because we love Christ.

We serve because we are grateful.

We worship because we have already been accepted—not because we are trying to earn acceptance.

Paul closes this section with one of the most powerful declarations in Scripture:
"It was for freedom that Christ set us free."

The Gospel calls us to live with confidence, joy, and assurance—not fear, uncertainty, or endless striving.

Stand firm in the freedom Christ has given you.

Rest, Renewal, and Worship in the Smokies

Slowing Down and Letting God In

The Smoky Mountains have a way of slowing us down.

The mountain views, winding roads, and peaceful mornings remind us that life is more than schedules, deadlines, and distractions.

Many people come to this area looking for rest. And for good reason.

Rest is not weakness. Rest is part of God's design.

From the very beginning, God established rhythms of work and rest. He knows our need to pause, reflect, and be renewed.

Yet true renewal goes deeper than simply taking time off.

A few days away may refresh our bodies, but worship refreshes our souls.

When we worship, we are reminded that God is in control. We remember His faithfulness.

We refocus our hearts on what is eternal rather than what is temporary.

The Smokies provide a beautiful backdrop for rest, but real peace is found in Christ.

As you enjoy the beauty of God's creation this season, take time to worship the Creator Himself. Open His Word. Spend time in prayer. Gather with fellow believers.

4 Ways July 4th Can Be Like Freedom in Christ

July 4th reminds me of freedom in Christ. I promise, this isn’t some smelly mixture of patriotism and Christianity. I just think there’s some powerful imagery in Independence Day. Let me explain.

A 4th of July Devotional

First, why does America celebrate the 4th of July? Something about apple pie, explosions in the sky, baseball games, and BBQ flames, right? No. On July 4, 1776, thirteen colonies in North America decided they were done paying their taxes and over their allegiance to the King of England. Colonial leaders got together to write the Declaration of Independence and then sign it into being. The Revolutionary War had already begun, but this was a statement of unity and determination to gain freedom from England’s rule. You might recognize this portion.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

4 Reasons July 4th Reminds Me of Freedom in Christ

It’s a gift. For all living Americans, July 4th is a gift. We didn’t earn it—we received it from the people who lived, led, and died to fight for it. Everyone who gets a gift has two questions. First, “Who is it from?” Second, “What does it do?” My freedom in Christ is from Jesus. I didn’t earn it. He died for it. That’s who it’s from, but what does it do? Galatians 5:1 reminds me, it’s for freedom we’ve been set free. What does my freedom do? Give more freedom. It’s freedom for me, my marriage, my kids, my friends, my co-workers, and my neighbors. I was given this gift to share.
It’s a mid-war declaration. July 4, 1776 came only about a year after the revolutionary war began and about six years before it would finally end. Yet, it’s the single most revered day of American history. This reminds me of battles we face. You may be fighting for your marriage, struggling financially, or just trying to raise godly kids. Either way, it may be time to make a mid-war declaration of your freedom in Christ.
It’s a celebration of restoration. Remember apple pie, explosions in the sky, baseball games, and BBQ flames? All to celebrate liberty once lost—but now found. Humans love to celebrate finding lost things because we were made in God’s image, and God parties big for restoration. Jesus told a story about this called the Prodigal Son. When the son came home, the Father killed his best cow and threw a party (Luke 15:11-24). Jesus even suggests angels celebrate in heaven when someone discovers freedom in Christ (Luke 15:10). And what happens when we all meet Jesus? A glorious supper (Revelation 19:16-17).
It’s united. The Declaration of Independence was written by thirteen different colonies, but within the document, they are called “we.” “We hold these truths to be self-evident …” Jesus set you and me free as individuals, but we live out this freedom as His Church. One body with many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). When your “I” becomes “we,” it’s amazing what we can accomplish.

A Fourth of July Prayer

Jesus,
Thank You for today, and for every good gift You’ve given me. As I celebrate freedom, remind me of the freedom You’ve given me through You. Thank You for setting me free from sin, shame, and fear. Help me live like that’s true, even when life feels hard.
Teach me to celebrate the ways You’re restoring people, including me. And help me use the freedom You’ve given me to love You and love others well. Thank You for never giving up on me.

Sometimes one of the quietest dangers in the Christian life is not running toward obvious sin, but slowly drifting back into the belief that we must earn the approval of the God who already loves us in Christ.

That was Paul's concern for the believers in Galatia.

After receiving salvation by grace, they began to believe that staying close to God depended on keeping religious laws and traditions.

Paul's response is emotional because the Gospel itself is at stake.

He reminds them they once lived in spiritual bondage. Why would they willingly return?
The same temptation exists today.

It is easy to measure our relationship with God by church attendance, Bible reading plans, volunteer hours, or moral performance. These practices can be beautiful gifts, but they were never meant to replace the warmth of a living relationship with Christ.

Christianity is not primarily about what we do for God.

It is about what God has already done for us through Jesus.

Paul's words challenge every believer to examine the heart.

Are we serving because we love Christ?

Or are we serving because we're trying to earn something He has already freely given?

The Gospel invites weary hearts to stop striving and start resting.

Not resting from obedience—but resting from trying to earn God's favor.

Because of Jesus, we are already loved.

Already accepted.

Already forgiven.

And from that secure foundation, joyful obedience naturally follows.

Faith Isn't on Vacation:

Finding God Even While You're Away

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to take a vacation from everything except your phone?

Even when we're away from work, school, and daily responsibilities, we often stay connected to emails, social media, and the constant flow of information. Yet one of the first things many people set aside while traveling is their spiritual routine.

Vacation is a wonderful gift. God designed us to rest, enjoy His creation, and spend meaningful time with family and friends. But taking a break from our normal schedule doesn't mean we need to take a break from our relationship with Him.

In fact, time away can provide unique opportunities to grow closer to God.

The beauty of the Smoky Mountains reminds us of the Creator's power and majesty. A quiet morning on a cabin porch can become a moment of prayer and reflection. A worship service in an unfamiliar church can introduce us to brothers and sisters in Christ we may never have met otherwise.

When Jesus withdrew from the crowds to rest, He didn't withdraw from His Father. Rest and worship were never intended to compete with one another.

Is God Your Father?

More Than Forgiven: Adopted

Many Christians understand that Jesus forgives sin. What we sometimes overlook is what happens next.

God doesn't simply forgive us and leave us standing outside the family.

He adopts us.

Paul highlights this incredible truth in Galatians 3:26–4:7. Through faith in Christ, believers become sons and heirs of God.

In the ancient world, adoption was a powerful legal act. An adopted child received the full rights and privileges of a biological child. They became a permanent member of the family and an heir to the inheritance.

Paul uses this image to help us understand our relationship with God.

Before Christ, humanity lived under the bondage of sin and the inability to satisfy God's perfect standard. The Law revealed our need but could not save us.

Then, at just the right time, God sent His Son.

Jesus came to redeem those under the Law so that we might receive adoption as sons.

What a beautiful picture of grace.

God doesn't merely tolerate us.

He welcomes us.

He doesn't simply forgive us.

He embraces us.

He doesn't leave us as servants.

He makes us heirs.

This changes how we view ourselves and how we live.

We no longer serve God in order to earn acceptance.

We serve because we have already been accepted.

We no longer obey out of fear.

We obey out of love.

The Gospel is more than forgiveness.

It is adoption.

And because we belong to God's family, we can live with confidence, security, and hope.

Do I truly believe God loves me as His child?
Am I trying to earn acceptance that Christ has already secured?
How should my identity in Christ shape my daily life?

Personal Devotional

Adopted by Grace

Scripture: Galatians 4:4–7

One of the most beautiful words in this passage is "adoption."

God could have chosen many ways to describe our salvation, but He chose the language of family.

Through Christ, believers are brought into a relationship with God that is personal, secure, and permanent.

Think about the comfort found in those words: "Abba, Father."

This was a term of intimacy and trust.

Paul is teaching that believers are not distant from God. We are welcomed into His presence because of Jesus.

When life becomes difficult, remember who you are.

You are loved.

You are forgiven.

You are adopted.

You are an heir of God's promise.¹

Your identity is not found in your successes or failures. It is found in Christ.

Today, thank God for making you part of His family.

Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me and adopting me through Jesus Christ. Help me live each day with confidence in Your love and faithfulness. Teach me to rest in my identity as Your child. Amen.

A Church in the Heart of a Tourist Town:

Why It Matters

Pigeon Forge is known for many things.

Families make memories here. Friends gather here. Millions of visitors come each year to experience the beauty of the Smoky Mountains and the attractions that make our town unique.

But beneath all the activity, there is something else that matters deeply.

People need hope.

While visitors may come for a few days, life's questions don't take a vacation. Questions about purpose, faith, relationships, forgiveness, and eternity travel with us wherever we go.
That's one reason a church in the heart of a tourist town matters.

GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES!

We live in a world filled with broken promises.

People break promises. Institutions fail. Circumstances change.

But Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God is different.

In Galatians 3, Paul points believers back to God's covenant with Abraham. Long before Moses received the Law, God promised that through Abraham's offspring all nations would be blessed.

That promise pointed directly to Jesus Christ.

Many people assume that God's plan for salvation began with rules and commandments. Yet Paul explains that God's promise came first. The Law was never intended to replace the promise.

Instead, the Law serves an important purpose.

It reveals our sin.

It shows us our inability to save ourselves.

It demonstrates our need for grace.

Like looking into a mirror, the Law helps us see the truth about ourselves. The problem is that mirrors cannot fix what they reveal.

Only Jesus can do that.

The good news of the Gospel is that God never intended for us to earn salvation through perfect obedience. None of us could accomplish that task.

Instead, He fulfilled His promise through Christ.

Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live.

He died the death we deserved.

He rose again to offer forgiveness and eternal life.

Because of Him, we can stop asking, "Am I good enough?"

Instead, we can confidently say, "Christ is enough."

God's promise remains secure because God's character never changes.

When life feels uncertain, remember this truth:

God keeps His promises.

The Freedom of Knowing Jesus Is Enough

Many people spend their lives wondering if they have done enough for God.

Have I been good enough?

Have I prayed enough?

Have I served enough?

Have I earned God's favor?

These questions are not new. The believers in Galatia wrestled with the same struggle.

False teachers had convinced them that faith in Christ was not enough. They needed Jesus plus religious works. Jesus plus the law. Jesus plus human effort.

Paul's response was direct and urgent.

"You foolish Galatians!"

The issue was not intelligence. The issue was spiritual confusion.

The Galatians had already received the Holy Spirit through faith. They knew Christ had saved them. Yet they were being tempted to believe that what began by faith must now be completed through human effort.

How often do we do the same thing?

We trust Christ for salvation, but then spend years trying to earn His approval.

The Gospel teaches something different.

Abraham was declared righteous because he believed in God. This happened centuries before the Law was given. God's plan has always been salvation by faith.

The Law serves an important purpose. It reveals our sin and our inability to save ourselves. It points us to our need for Jesus.

And Jesus accomplished what we never could.

He perfectly obeyed the Father.

He fulfilled the Law.

He bore our curse on the cross.

He paid our debt completely.

Because of Him, believers can live with assurance, peace, and confidence.

The Christian life is not about striving to earn God's love. It is about living in grateful response to the love already given through Christ.

The Gospel remains wonderfully simple:
Jesus is enough.

Reflection Questions:

Am I trusting Christ or my own efforts?
What areas of my life reveal a tendency to "earn" God's approval?
How does knowing Jesus paid my debt change the way I live?

Grace Is Enough

Many people spend their lives trying to earn God's approval. They strive to be good enough, religious enough, moral enough, or successful enough. Yet Scripture teaches a radically different message.

In Galatians 2, Paul confronts Peter because Peter's actions were sending the wrong message about salvation. Peter had been freely fellowshipping with Gentile believers until certain Jewish believers arrived. Suddenly he withdrew, fearing criticism.

Paul recognized the danger immediately.

The issue was bigger than table fellowship. The issue was the Gospel.

If people begin believing that faith in Christ must be supplemented by works, traditions, or human effort, then grace is no longer grace.

Paul reminds us that "a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ."

That truth remains just as important today.

Many believers understand grace at conversion but then spend the rest of their lives trying to maintain God's favor through performance. We begin measuring our standing with God by our successes and failures rather than by Christ's finished work.

But Paul points us back to the cross.

When we place our faith in Christ, we are united with Him. His righteousness becomes ours. His victory becomes ours. His life becomes our life.

This does not lead to careless living. Instead, it produces loving obedience.

Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments."

We obey because we love Him.

We serve because we love Him.

We worship because we love Him.

The Christian life is not driven by fear of losing salvation but by gratitude for receiving it.

Grace is enough.

Christ is enough.

And because He is enough, we can walk confidently by faith every day.

Reflection Questions:

Am I trying to earn God's approval?
Do I obey Christ from love or obligation?
Where do I need to trust God's grace more fully?

It's Great to Be a Tennessee Vol!

June 1 marks the 230th birthday of the State of Tennessee, and we're proud to call this remarkable place home. From the Great Smoky Mountains to the Cumberland Plateau and the Mississippi River, Tennessee is a rich blend of landscapes, cultures, and traditions. Carved from the western territory of North Carolina in 1796, Tennessee became the 16th state admitted to the Union, with General John Sevier serving as its first governor.

For thousands of years before statehood, Tennessee was home to Native peoples, including the Muskogee Creek, Yuchi, Shawnee, Cherokee, and Chickasaw. Many of our towns, rivers, and even the state's name trace their roots to Native languages. "Tennessee" likely comes from Tanasi, a Cherokee town located along the Little Tennessee River, though the exact meaning of the word remains uncertain.

Tennessee is divided into three parts that are "geographically, culturally, legally, and economically distinct." The Grand Divisions are legally recognized in the state constitution and state law and are represented on the flag of Tennessee by its three prominent stars.¹Local weathercasts often stop at the invisible line of the nearby region, unless severe weather threatens from there.

Tennessee is called the Volunteer State, so named when hundreds of volunteers stepped forward during the War of 1812, many of them led by General Andrew Jackson, who later became the seventh President of the United States. Later during the Mexican-American War, when President Polk issued a call for a couple of thousand soldiers, over 30,000 volunteered, and the name stuck. Today, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville is known as the Home of the Volunteers. "It's great to be a Tennessee Vol!" is often chanted at home and away football games, capturing the spirit of being a Tennesseean wherever we are.

After the Civil War, Tennessee was the first Confederate state readmitted to the Union. Interestingly, the western region of the state voted to secede from the Union while much of East Tennessee remained strongly pro-Union throughout the war. That division caused brothers to fight against brothers; fathers against sons. Tennessee was also the only Southern state to abolish slavery before the end of the Civil War, doing so through a constitutional amendment in early 1865—months before the 13th Amendment was ratified nationally.

Tennessee is widely regarded as the birthplace of country music, thanks to the influential Bristol Sessions of 1927. Tennessee is also home to Memphis barbecue, Mountain Dew, Piggly Wiggly (the nation's first self-service grocery store), and miniature golf—each an interesting part of the state's cultural story.

The first Native American newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, was published in 1828. Scientists developed the atomic bomb in the secret city of Oak Ridge during World War II. Early touchscreen technology was pioneered by University of Tennessee alumnus Dr. Samuel Hurst, whose innovations helped shape the touchscreen devices we use today.

Today, Tennessee is known as a leader in technology, agriculture, manufacturing (especially automobiles), and research. Tourism brings in millions of dollars to each region as well: East Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), the country's most visited national park; Nashville, the Home of Country Music; Memphis, the Home of Rock 'n' Roll; Chattanooga, home of the Chattanooga Choo-Choo and Lookout Mountain. And "Rocky Top" is considered one of the most recognized college fight songs in the world!

Tennessee is a state of contrasts—mountains and rivers, farms and factories, country music and cutting-edge research. Yet through it all runs a strong sense of heritage, community, and volunteer spirit.

Here in East Tennessee, we have the privilege of welcoming millions of visitors each year to the Great Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg²—many of whom worship with us during their stay. Happy 230th Birthday, Tennessee!

We are excited to announce that First Baptist Church will host a three-hour condensed Vacation Bible School on Friday, June 12th. The theme of VBS will be “Illumination Station: Shining a Light on Who Jesus Really Is.”

The verse of the day will be John 8:12: Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

FBC will advertise the event through flyers, ads, and signage. Our goal is to register 100 children for the day's activities. The kids will get to attend sessions for crafts, recreation, STEM activities, and, of course, snacks. Their craft activity will include creating a tie-dyed t-shirt to take home.

We need volunteers! If you can help with snacks, lead the children to their next rotation, etc., please sign up with the church office or on the sheet in the sanctuary hallway. Be sure to include your t-shirt size when you sign up. Every volunteer will get one!

Campus Outreach Students & Staff Arrive Soon

This week, we are excited to welcome the staff of Campus Outreach - Central Illinois, who will be worshipping with us for the summer. The students will arrive on Tuesday.

We’re thrilled to have Campus Outreach here, as they work in the community and spread Jesus' message. They will also participate in Sunday worship as members of our choir, assist in the nursery as needed, and engage with the students of the International Student ministry during the week. As you meet these staff and students in the coming weeks, take a moment to welcome them into our fellowship.

Scholarship Winners to be recognized on May 17

The students receiving a gift from the Mable Reynolds Scholarship will be recognized during worship on Sunday, May 17. Before Sunday, the scholarship winners will be recognized during the PFHS Awards Day on Thursday, May 14. Graduation is Thursday, May 21.

The Mable Reynolds Scholarship, an award for graduating seniors at Pigeon Forge High School and former PFHS graduates, is given each year to students who plan to attend full- or part-time undergraduate studies or seminary. Scholarship applicants are asked to list the extracurricular activities they have participated in at school and at church over the years, and to provide a Faith Journey Statement. The statement speaks to their faith life inside and outside the church, how their faith has impacted their lives, and their career decisions. We also require recommendations from a pastor or youth leader and one other person.

Over $75,000 in scholarship funds have been given to 40+ students since 2017. The scholarship is an open-ended gift designed to carry on the many good deeds and years of service by Mable Reynolds (mother of the late Richard Williams) during her lifetime and is funded solely by the family.

Spring Rod Run was a HUGE Success

Total donations for the Spring Rod Run = $11,415.31!

We had beautiful weather for the Rod Run this spring and our visitors were extremely generous. We touched the lives of hundreds of folks in those few days. We may never know what our witness may have sparked, but we know that God works in mysterious ways. Continue to pray that the Holy Spirit continues to work in the lives of our visitors.

Ladies' Book Study Continues through May

The Tuesday morning Ladies’ Book Study will continue through May. If you haven’t been attending, don't worry—you are still welcome to join us! The current study focuses on the book *Twelve Extraordinary Women: How God Shaped Women of the Bible, and What He Wants to Do with You* (Faithful Lives Series). You can miss a meeting or two and still stay on track.

The group meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Sometimes we have a light lunch afterward. For more information, please contact the church office.

Rev. Alan Duncan to Speak on Sunday, May 3

A former pro-football player, a church strategist for the IMB, and a retired senior associate pastor (Manley Baptist Church, Morristown), Rev. Alan Duncan currently serves as the Associate Director of Missions Mobilization for the Tom Elliff Center for Missions at Carson Newman University (TECM). He helps work with churches that have high school or community college students who feel called to missions or ministry. The TECM provides a non-academic missions fellowship where students can allow the Lord to prepare them for a lifetime of missional service.

Alan and his wife, Andrea, are the proud grandparents of eight grandsons and three granddaughters.

Mable Reynolds Scholarship Applications now available for PFHS Seniors & Graduates

The Mable Reynolds Scholarship, an award for graduating seniors at Pigeon Forge High School and former PFHS graduates, is given each year to students who plan to attend full- or part-time undergraduate studies or seminary. SPRING ROD RUN IS HERE!

This weekend is significant for First Baptist Church. We are welcoming thousands of visitors to Pigeon Forge, and we have a wonderful opportunity to minister to and witness to them. A smile, a bottle of water, a hot dog, or a prayer—each gesture demonstrates Christ's love to our new friends and our community.

On Sunday, we are always blessed to have many visitors join us for worship before they head home. We will see both new faces and familiar ones, and each person presents an opportunity to offer genuine hospitality.

We’re getting ready to welcome thousands of visitors to Pigeon Forge for the Spring Rod Run this month—and it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to show the love of Christ in simple, meaningful ways.

Kevin W. is once again coordinating volunteers, and we’d love for you to be part of it. You can help with setting up the parking areas on Wednesday, April 15, or serve during the Rod Run by assisting with parking and greeting guests as they arrive.

John F. and John W. will also be setting up the Prayer Tent—complete with free hot dogs! This has become such a special outreach, offering encouragement, conversation, and prayer to people as they pass by our campus.

On Sunday, we’re always blessed with many visitors joining us for worship before they head home. We’ll see both new faces and familiar ones, and each person is an opportunity to extend genuine hospitality.

Let’s welcome everyone with a warm smile, a kind word, and a heart ready to serve—trusting God to use even the smallest interactions in a big way.

We've raised $3,437 to date!

We've surpassed our goal of $3,000!!!!

With support from the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, Troy (and Chanel) Gause moved from mowing the grass at a church with an elderly membership to planting a dynamic church in Marrero, Louisiana. Palm Sunday – “Hosanna!”

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” – Matthew 21:9

Join us on Sunday, March 29, at 10:30 a.m. as we remember Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and begin our journey toward the cross together in worship. We will celebrate the Lord's Supper during worship, and Pastor Terry will bring the message.

Easter Celebration – He Is Risen!

Join us Easter Sunday at FBC Pigeon Forge (10:30 a.m.) as we celebrate the victory of Christ over sin and death. Invite a friend, bring your family, and come expecting joy. The adult choir will present parts of "Grace that Amazes: An Easter Musical" during worship. Pastor Terry will bring the message.

Holy Week With Children & Grandchildren

Read the Easter story aloud from a children’s Bible each evening.
Create a simple “Resurrection Garden” with soil, rocks, and a small empty tomb.
Share communion as a family on Thursday night, explaining the meaning of the bread and cup.
On Saturday, talk about waiting and hope—how the disciples didn’t yet understand Sunday was coming.
